It all started at the beginning of the pandemic. I was beading with a couple of close friends—masks on, chatting quietly, and working on a loom pattern that called for more colors than I had ever used before. Believe it or not, it was one of my first projects with more than three colors!

As I poured beads out onto my mat and tried to label them, frustration hit. I thought to myself: There has to be a better way. A friend suggested I get one of those mats with holes cut out for beads. No, to me, they seemed like an accident waiting to happen, plus I didn't like the fact that it wasn't modular. 20 holes.. even if you only need to use 3. They didn't support smooth hand motions and felt awkward. But my biggest complaint was They were not movable.

That’s when it clicked:
